Why is it that celebrities always seem to get away with crimes in which ordinary citizens would get the worst punishment for? As a lover of entertainment shows and magazines, I constantly hear about one star after another's legal woes. I'm hooked on knowing what's happening in Hollywood and whose dating who but I'm not impressed with stories about stars who get away with everything from drunk driving to murder.
Everyone remembers how major news outlets covered Paris Hilton getting sentenced to jail. Many of us cheered when we heard the judges' decision, pumping our fist in the air like Judd Neslon in The Breakfast Club (my favorite teen movie scene). It was refreshing to finally see a judge treat a celebrity like an "Average Joe."
I'm not going to lie and say that the picture of her crying in the police car was not a little bit gratifying. We finally saw her vulnerabilities and I hope little girls who admired her saw how poor decisions can change lives.
