She's Gone Country Why is it that there are such extreme opinions on country music? When you ask for people's thoughts on the genre that is taking the world by storm, they either adore it or detest it. I happen to be one of the admirers of this style, especially the more modern artists. Take a ride in my car or scroll through my itunes library, and you'll find them all, Rascal Flatts, Garth Brooks, Martina McBride and Shania Twain. I've loved country since I was little, but lately its popularity is soaring. I think this is due in large part to American Idol. Many have heard of current favorite, 2005 American Idol Carrie Underwood, but she was not the only country artist to appear on the show. Josh Gracin, who finished in fourth place in 2003, now has a successful music career as well. I think the trend of country artists to couple up with celebrities is also adding to honky tonk popularity. Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman, Kenny Chesney and Renée Zellweger, and Brad Paisley and Jennifer Williams are a few classic examples. Country sweethearts Tim McGraw and Faith Hill have both appeared in recent films, bringing Nashville to Hollywood. It is my hope that as country music continues to gain popularity, those who despise it will give it another chance. These tunes should no longer be labeled as twangy, ignorant ballads that only relate stories of losing one's wife, truck and dog! I admit, a few of these stereotypical tunes still appear now and again, but the majority of the new singles have pop influences that makes them catchy and fun. Some singers are even incorporating rap into their songs! I recommend choosing a country station for your drive to work or during your workout to get your feet wet with the latest hits. Also check out the new group, Little Big Town. Their latest album, The Road to Here, might just make a believer out of you. These days, you don't have to be a redneck or even own a tractor to appreciate some down-home good music! - Courtesy of JoAnna |
